STATEMENT ABOUT RECENT DETENTIONS AGAINST JOURNALISTS

 

723625b4c6bf41bab538e2feb8ae0750-4463e5f007c74b8ba43f9cd0e2a9ac84-e52bcbeb03843331680f6a706700c9e2The Turkish-American community condemns detentions of Ekrem Dumanli, editor-in-chief of highest circulating newspaper in Turkey, Zaman daily, Hidayet Karaca, chief executive of Samanyolu Media Group, and dozens of others, on phony charges, as a blatant breach of press freedom and rule of law.

Dumanlı and Karaca were detained along with more than 20 people in a nationwide operation early on Sunday, December 14, 2014. A list of suspects to be detained, released by İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, shows that a total of 32 people are to be detained.

The suspects are accused of "forming, leading or being a member of an armed terrorist organization," "forgery" and "slander," according to a statement released by the prosecutor's office.

Raindrop Foundation and Embrace Relief Host the 2014 Share Your Holidays Food Drive

food 8On Friday, December 5th, 2014, the Raindrop Foundation and Embrace Relief had the opportunity to team up with ABC 13 local news station and the Houston Food Bank for their annual Share Your Holidays Food Drive. The purpose of the drive is to collect food donations for our neighbors who are currently living at or below the poverty line. With the prices of food and transportation rising, many families and individuals are finding it increasingly difficult to choose between putting food on the table and paying their rent/mortgage. Katherine Whaley from ABC 13 local news studio reported the event live from the Raindrop Foundation’s Turquoise Center, which was the designated food drop off location.

November night ladies of Houston came together to celebrate the Citizenship Month

DSCF0389On a fine November night ladies of Houston came together to celebrate the Citizenship Month. The room was filled with guests from different nationalities representing many faces of Houston. Naomi Ostfeld, Attorney and secretary of the Brays Oaks Super Neighborhood, made an inspiring speech about how citizenship month is celebrated in Houston. The night continued with fun games and participants enjoyed the delicious food and coffee. Noah's pudding, the dessert prepared by mixing a variety of grains, dried fruits, and nuts, was a reflection of the diversity at the coffee night and in the city of Greater Houston.
Next coffee night will be held in January. Happy holidays to you and your loved ones!

Embrace Relief 2014 Share Your Holidays Food Drive Live Show at ABC 13 on Friday.

The cornerstone of the Embrace Relief’s mission is service above self. This year, our mission will be personified by the millions of people who will benefit from our holiday food drive, geared towards feeding families in need. Food insecurity is a substantial issue globally and we want to ensure that we are doing our part in helping out those affected by it. Many of our own neighbors right here in Houston area are currently living below the poverty line. This means that families are forced to make tough decisions in providing basic necessities. With the rising cost of food and transportation, it can become very difficult for families to choose between keeping a roof over their head and keeping food on the table.

Celebrating citizenship month with cuisine classes in Raindrop Turkish House.

cuisine (3)On Saturday, November 15, 2014, participants of Raindrop cuisine classes gathered with a special theme, American Taste, to observe citizenship month. Raindrop Foundation holds cuisine classes on a regular basis to teach samples from the Turkish cuisine. A special session was held to celebrate the citizenship month. It was a session demonstrating the diversity of our city as the menu included items from the American and Turkish cuisines. Participants enjoyed mango mole, corn pudding, Ashura (Noah’s Pudding), Kisir (cracked wheat salad), baklava and borek after they are taught how to make mango mole. It was a “delicious” celebration of the citizenship month.

Celebrating citizenship month with Ebru classes in Raindrop Turkish House.

course-6Raindrop Foundation observed the citizenship month, which is “an annual volunteer-driven celebration that celebrates Houston’s civic diversity” with numerous events and activities. One of the events was free Ebru classes for Raindrop Youth Development Center students held on Saturday, November 15, 2014. For the citizenship month, the theme was the flag of Texas. Participating Turkish American children made artistic representations of Texas flag using Ebru techniques. Ebru is a traditional Turkish art of water marbling. Patterns are created on water using a variety of colors, which then are transferred onto paper.

DSC 0428On November 1st 2014, Raindrop Youth Development Center attended to an Tree Planting activity in our neighborhood. Raindrop Foundation,Council Member Larry Green, TXU Energy, Houston Parks and Recreation Department organized planting 15-gallon trees along esp;esplanades of West Bellfort Avenue. Raindrop Youth Development Center attended with 15 volunteers and planted about 40 trees to our neighborhood.

Raindrop Foundation and Embrace Relief Collaborated With State Senator Rodney Ellis for his “Fifth Annual Holiday Food Distribution”

On Tuesday, November 25, 2014, the Raindrop Foundation and Embrace Relief aided State Senator Rodney Ellis in his “Fifth Annual Holiday Food Distribution”. The purpose of the food distribution, especially during this time of year, is to give thanks for our blessings and reach out to the community members in need.  Along with Last Organic Outpost, Whole Foods Market, and the Pearland Farmers Market providing fresh produce, Raindrop Foundation and Embrace Relief provided over 400 pounds of Halal beef for area families in need. The event was hosted by the Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation then following a distribution at the Kelly Village Community Building. The families who attended the food distribution were also provided with turkeys in addition to the produce and beef they received.

The Raindrop Foundation and Embrace Relief’s Food Donation to the Houston Food Bank

IMG 0497.JPGOn Friday, November 21, 2014, the Raindrop Foundation joined together with the Embrace Relief Organization to help donate food to the Houston Food Bank, which distributes 50 million nutritious meals each year. This is enough to provide more than 100,000 meals a day. According to the Houston Food Bank’s website, on a typical day in the 18 southeast Texas counties served by the food bank, 66,200 people cannot afford to purchase food for themselves and are forced in hunger.
